Java Moss or Taxiphyllum barbieri is part of the Hypnaceae family of aquatic mosses. They are native to shaded waterways throughout tropical areas in Asia. Due to its unique habitat in the wild, this plant can be grown successfully submerged in the aquarium, or emerged in a high humidity terrarium, paludarium, or vivarium.
Java Moss has the ability to grow on most surfaces in the aquarium. This variety is adored because of its versatility and natural ambiance. This moss tends to be used as a carpeting plant or attached to the back wall of the enclosure to create a moss wall. Java moss also works well when attached rock or wood to soften up hardscape.
In the aquarium, Taxiphyllum barbieri is a relatively easy to care for plant that requires low to medium light and minimal fertilization or CO2 supplementation. Moss is ideal for small aquariums, nano aquariums, shrimp tanks, terrariums, and paludariums.
Although this plant may be a slow grower in the aquarium, with enough time and care it will begin to flourish and spread.
